@WF Price, “The reason the Sunnis dominated the Baath party was that Arab nationalism was a largely Sunni phenomenon in Iraq (unlike Syria). Our new Shiite “allies,” like Nouri al-Maliki, were aligned with theocratic Iran (al-Maliki is essentially an Iranian puppet).”

It’s also important to that the three founders of the Baath Party were Michael Afalq(A Greek Orthodox Christian), Salah al_din Al-Bitar(a Sunni Muslim), Zaki al-Aruzi(a Alawite Muslim) whose goal was a political party based upon Arab Nationalism, Anti-Imperialism, Socialism. In fact, many of the influential thinkers of Arab Nationalism were Christians of one sort or another-George Antoinus, Butrus al-Bustani, George Habash, etc.

I suspect that it was a way for minority Christians in Muslim majority countries to survive and negotiate with a Muslim majority culture. In essence, they tried to make Arab Ethnocentrism the primary group identifier instead of religion. Under those terms they could be fairly successful as a religious minorities.

Now that Arab Nationalism has been thrown in the dustbin of history, the Muslim world has returned to their primary group identifier-religion. Under those terms, Christians and other religious groups are and will suffer immensely. Perhaps to extinction.

As for ISIL/ISIS/IS/whatever, the more one examines their ideology, the more one sees they are very different than even Al Qaeda.

From Mahdiwatch;

“4) I would maintain that IS atrocities like the beheading of James Foley and the mass murders of Shi`is and Yazidis are, in effect, “bizarre rituals intended to bring about the end of the world”[Ghostbusters reference]–or at least to spark the Mahdi’s coming. I truly think that IS has passed into the realm of trying to hotwire the apocalypse. God willing no one is stupid enough to try and find “moderate ISIS” with whom to negotiate.”*

FWIW, if you’re unfamiliar with Islamic Eschatology(End Times-Apocalypse theology), I highly recommend a quick view of the 1966 film, ‘Khartoum’ with Chuck Heston as ‘Chinese’ Gordon and Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi. It’s actually quite entertaining and informative. Here’s a clip; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZL_TOV9-m0
